Another big wine and great example of Côte-Rôtie with 100% syrah. Note is powerful with notes of violet, currant and anise with plenty of smokey minerals. The wine is full and powerful and will stand-up to full flavored meats, mushrooms and game. The layered flavors attach the palate and the finish is long with smoke, olives and ripe tannin. This is a wine for the cellar as it will age well for 15+ years. However, it's drinking very well now due to the ample fruit in the ripe vintage. 325 cases produced.
Jean-Michel Gerin (Northern Rhne, France)
Jean-Michel Gerin is the chief alternative to the behemoth Guigal for the best of Cte Rtie. In the most highly prized of Northern Rhne vineyards, La Landonne, Gerin has the second largest holding and challenges Guigals other bottlings with his "Les Grandes Places" and "Champin Le Seigneur." Gerin is one of the blessed winemakers in the world, wherein all of his wines are allocated and sold well in advance. He has the luxury of choosing who buys his wines. Gerin produces Condrieu (widely regarded as the best place in the world to produce Viognier), a baseline Syrah from vineyards outside of Cte-Rtie, and his three Cte Rtie bottlings. Because his wines are largely regarded as benchmarks for the region, the variety (Syrah), and because the wines age beautifully for 10+ years (even in an off vintage) Gerins wines are a proud addition to any cellar. In addition, Jean-Michel is an incredibly likeable individual who makes a fantastic dinner companion and who will certainly not be the first one to call it a night while there is wine on the table.
