Featured Producer:
Hacienda Terra d'Uro
Hacienda Terra d'Uro, located in the Toro winemaking region of Spain, is an eleven acre estate producing three wines from the Tinto de Toro grape variety in a very clean, full bodied modern style. The estate is owned by Oscar Garrote, who has made a career of wine, restaurants and professional rugby. The out of the way estate is five miles up the Douro River from the village of Toro and boasts some of the oldest vines in the region. The average age of the vines that serve to produce the Selección bottling is over 80 years, with some vines as old as 140 years.
The Toro region has become famous for its full flavored red wines, and many of the most famous winemakers in Spain and France (including Michel Roland) have invested in the area. The climate is very dramatic as it combines poor soils (limestone and shale in the case of Terra d'Uro) with elevations between 600 and 750 meters above sea level, and very hot summer weather that ensures ripeness.
In fact, Toro is one of the few regulated wine regions of the world that must put a ceiling on the alcohol level in wine. Many quality wine producing regions have a floor to ensure quality, bur far fewer have an upper limit. Toro has a ceiling of 15%. Also as a result of the extreme conditions, the ubiquitous Spanish varietal tempranillo has evolved in Toro to become the Tinto de Toro clone, which is characterized by its significantly thicker skins, darker color, and full tannin profile.

Though the estate makes internationally styled wines that appeal to American tastes, the work at the estate is largely done by hand. This includes the time consuming process of destemming after harvest. This extra manual process allows for a further opportunity to sort grapes to ensure that only the best quality fruit is actually being fermented for the final product. Fermentation is done in a combination of oak casks and steel tanks, while aging is completed in new French oak for 8-12 months. As a further nod to tradition and to capture the nature of the estate in the bottle, none of the wine produced at Terra d'Uro is filtered or fined.

Leathery and seductive throughout with a stick to your teeth finish that lingers. Drink now through 2015 with full flavored red meat. 750 cases produced.

May 16 (past Monday tasting) - Spanish Wines
We were eager to taste the wines of Vina Tuelda with Isaac Fernandez when he arrived from Spain on Monday. We started with the 2008 and 2010 Rosés, comparing the older vintage to the current one. The acidity of the 2008 allowed it to age well, and its original ripe apple and cherry flavors have mellowed out into a well-integrated wine that is perfect for hours of back porch sipping. The 2010 Rosé is tasting fresh with flavors of cherry and strawberry. The freshness in Vina Tuelda's Rosé comes from grapes that are purposefully harvested young from young vines. We moved on to the Crianza 2008, which was a tough vintage due to a freeze during the season. In the end Isaac managed to produce a wine reflective of the Ribera del Duero region. The nose is clean and full of spices, fresh leather, and cocoa with strong notes of toasted oak from 16 months spent in new French and American oak. "The wine is still young," says Isaac, "but is well structured with dusty tannins making it very easy to drink." We finished with the vineyard's 2005 Black Label which was aged in 100% French oak. Isaac poured a small amount in his glass, swirled the wine in a delicate manner, brought it to his nose and simply said: "Elegant." The presence of black raspberries and the distinct scent imparted by French oak follow on the palate with a textured, pleasing mouth feel that seamlessly fades into a clean finish. |
