Remhoogte (Stellenbosch, South Africa) Remhoogte Wine Estate is situated on the foothills of the Simonsberg Mountain in Stellenbosch, a prime wine producing area in South Africa. The Dutch name, Remhoogte, is derived from the early days when brakes needed to be applied to the ox wagons as they descended the steep slopes leading down into Stellenbosch. The estate is owned and run by the Boustred family, and strives to produce small quantities of red wine of finesse and quality. Michel Rolland, the world renowned wine consultant and producer from Bordeaux, was so impressed by the Merlot from Remhoogte that he chose to become a partner in the cellar. The first wines from the partnership were produced in 2002 and are red blends, the specialty of Michel Rolland. Each year he assesses the wines produced from the vineyards of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinotage and more recently Shiraz, and creates the three blends produced by Remhoogte. The vineyards of Remhoogte are situated on south and south west facing slopes. They have spectacular views of the mountains of Stellenbosch to the South and Table Mountain to the West. A section of the farm has been set aside as a game area, and Zebra, Wildebeest, Springbok and Eland bring the spirit of Africa to the wine lands of the Western Cape.
