Quintodecimo is the personal estate of oenologist Luigi Moio and is located in the Italian wine region of Campania in the village of Mirabella. Luigi currently holds a professorship of oenology at the University of Naples and has been one of Southern Italy's leading wine consultants for many years. Because he has been trained in Bordeaux and Burgundy as well as in his native Italy, Luigi brings a broader perspective to the production of l ocal cultivars than is typical of winemakers in Campania. This broad experience, combined with his somewhat technical role of teaching oenology, gives him a unique approach that he describes as follows: "The production cycle is simple, harmonious and rational; this is fundamental for the production of wines that are an expression of the sensorial identity of the grapes of the Campania region, of their own territory and of the year of production." He is at the same time a technocrat and a believer in the expression of terroir. Above all though, he is a perfectionist as he would rather not sell a wine than to settle for something less than his demands for only the highest quality.
When the wine estate was established in 2001, the name Quintodecimo was taken from the ancient town near the winery. It has a lively history as it is located along the famous Appian Way. The specific history dates back to the 8th century, but the town was destroyed by Byzantine invaders in the 12th century and only a small village remained. Today the ruins of the city wall, an aqueduct, baths, and an amphitheater can be united.
The only grapes grown on the Quintodecimo estate are the traditional varieties of aglianico, fiano, greco and falanghina. The estate produces two red wines, Terra D'Eclano and Vigna Quintodecimo from the aglianico grape and three white wines called Exultet, Giallo D'Arles and Via del Campo from the other white varietals. Starting soon, a single vineyard aglianico wine will be made available. Luigi has earned the respect of The Wine Advocate's Antonio Galloni who says, "Quintodecimo is quickly establishing itself as one of the region's top estates. This is a winery readers will want to keep an eye on." Bond Street Imports is, needless to say, thrilled to have the wine as part of the portfolio and to share it with our clients.
