The challenging 2008 vintage presented a very floral and structured wine. The nose is of white flowers and anise. The body is fully developed and the mid-palate full, but with added acid and zip on the finish. White peach and mild apple flavors mingle with a keen minerality. Enjoy now or for the next 4-5 years with a variety of cheeses, seafood or on its own. Especially good with the 2008 is goat cheese.
Jean-Michel Gerin (Northern Rh么ne, France)
Jean-Michel Gerin is the chief alternative to the behemoth Guigal for the best of C么te R么tie. In the most highly prized of Northern Rh么ne vineyards, La Landonne, Gerin has the second largest holding and challenges Guigal鈥檚 other bottlings with his "Les Grandes Places" and "Champin Le Seigneur." Gerin is one of the blessed winemakers in the world, wherein all of his wines are allocated and sold well in advance. He has the luxury of choosing who buys his wines. Gerin produces Condrieu (widely regarded as the best place in the world to produce Viognier), a baseline Syrah from vineyards outside of C么te-R么tie, and his three C么te R么tie bottlings. Because his wines are largely regarded as benchmarks for the region, the variety (Syrah), and because the wines age beautifully for 10+ years (even in an off vintage) Gerin鈥檚 wines are a proud addition to any cellar. In addition, Jean-Michel is an incredibly likeable individual who makes a fantastic dinner companion and who will certainly not be the first one to call it a night while there is wine on the table.
