This fresh, focused, medium-bodied red is supple and polished, with black cherry and currant fruit. The toasty oak is well-integrated in this harmonious wine, as are the light, firm tannins. Serve with lean cuts of beef, pasta, or roasted pork. Drink now after a decanting or cellar through 2016.
Note: This is a 1.5L Magnum
Domaine de l'A (Bordeaux, France)
This gem of a property, renowned for its lovely aromatic wines, is the personal domaine of renowned wine consultant Stéphane Derenoncourt, and his wife Christine. Purchased in 1999, this 6 hectares estate is adjacent to the appellation of Saint Emiion, which lies just eastward. Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, in descending order, are the varietals planted, with vines attaining an average age of 35 years. Given the identity of the owner, it is hardly surprising that diligent attention to detail is provided along at every step of the way from vineyard management through to winemaking. The philosophy here is to consider the vineyard within its entire natural context, notably its soils, microclimate and ecosystem, which are the foundations of a great terroir. All vineyard work is manual, and the compost, entirely organic, comes from a nearby farm. Plant treatments are sprayed, therefore non-invasive, as these are easily washed off the foliage by the rains. Each parcel is harvested separately, and often at different times according to grape maturity levels, followed by a double triage of the grapes at the winery, ensuring a rigorous berry selection. Fermentation takes place in large oak barrels (foudres), followed by malolactic fermentation and elevage on lees in oak barriques (70% new oak, 30% of first use barrels) for 18 months prior to bottling.
