Ripe fruit aromas of raspberry and cherry with tobacco and minerals. It has some appealing notes of aromatic plants such as rosemary and thyme completed with some toast. The Cabernet Sauvignon shows through the Tempranillo to provide the wine a familiar tone and structure. The balance of French and American oak serve to add interest, while the long aging in the bottle at the winery enables earlier drinking for the wine enthusiast. Elegant fine tannins lead to a blockbuster finish of cherry and cigar box flavors. Production: 1,100 cases. Will continue to improve through 2015, but drinks wonderfully now.
Note: This is the 1.5L Magnum
Bodega Uribes Madero (La Mancha, Spain)
The Uribes Madero estate, also known as La Calzadilla, is located in Castile-La Mancha, east of Madrid and near the provincial capital of Cuenca. This is a relatively wild and semi-mountainous area, rich in history, as can be witnessed by the many sights of astonishing roman ruins, and old Castilian fortified towns with centuries old architecture. It was near the village of Huete, with a winemaking tradition dating back to medieval times, to which retired businessman Franciso Uribes-Madero and his wife, Celia, and decided to found their winery. The areas combination of unfertile soils, high altitude (900 meters), and the nearby Douro valley with is beneficial micro-climate is ideally suited for growing high quality grapes and wine production. The vineyard was first planted with Tempranillo, Garnacha and Cabernet Sauvignon, with Syrah later introduced. True to the estates motto, the wines here are artisanal, as grapes are picked by hand, only indigenous yeasts are used, and wines are not filtered, all under the watchful eye of winemaker, Alfonso Torrente. The estates top-line cuvee, Gran Calzadilla, is produced only in the best years. An assemblage of Tempranillo (70-80%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (20-30%), it is aged in French oak barrels (50% new, 50% one fill) for 18 months, and then sees bottle ageing for a further 24 months.
